SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT TO INTRODUCE CIVIL-UNION LAW
South Africa's cabinet will introduce a bill in Parliament to create same-sex civil unions.
Government spokesperson Themba Maseko said the proposed law will complement the Marriage Act, giving same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as married people.
But that may not go far enough. On December 1, 2005, the nation's Constitutional Court gave lawmakers one year to change laws to allow gay couples to marry under the Marriage Act itself. It said if Parliament failed to act by the deadline, the court would rewrite the act.
The court said prohibiting same-sex marriage violated South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution. The ruling was essentially unanimous, with the sole dissenter opposing only the one-year delay, arguing that the ruling should take effect immediately.
Currently, same-sex couples have access to traditional marriage in Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain and Massachusetts.
NEPALI GAYS LOBBY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTION
Gays, lesbians and transgender people in Nepal are seeking protection in the new constitution that is being prepared, the Indo-Asia News Service reported August 24.
They have demanded decriminalization of "unnatural sex," political representation, access to marriage or civil unions, and the addition of a transgender category - in addition to male and female -- on the citizenship card and other government certificates.
Organizations pushing for the changes include the GLBT Blue Diamond Society and the lesbian group Mitini Nepal.
CANADIAN PARTY TO STAND FIRM ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
Canada's Bloc Québécois political party has promised to stand united against Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's plan to initiate parliamentary reconsideration of the 2005 vote that legalized same-sex marriage.
All of the party's 51 members in the 308-member House of Commons will be expected to vote in favor of same-sex marriage in any reassessment of the matter.
The 29 members of the New Democratic Party are planning to do the same.
Recent polling found that 62 percent of Canadians oppose any attempt to take away same-sex couples' access to marriage.
BRIT PRO SOCCER TEAM EMBRACES GAYS
In an unprecedented move, top-level British professional soccer team Manchester City Football Club has paid "four figures" to join the Diversity Champions program of the leading national gay-rights group Stonewall, The Observer reported August 27.
The action commits the team to recruit gays to work at the stadium, reach out to gay fans, ban homophobic language and implement other "gay-friendly" initiatives.
"We want to send a welcoming message to gay, lesbian and bisexual supporters, be inclusive and be a progressive employer," said Alistair Mackintosh, the club's chief executive.
The Observer, which said Mackintosh's sister is an open lesbian, commented, "The move could lead to a dramatic change of attitude in the macho world of football, which is regarded as one of the last bastions of homophobia."
WORLDPRIDE PARADE RESCHEDULED
The WorldPride parade, scheduled for August 10 in Jerusalem but cancelled because hundreds of police officers needed to protect it were unavailable due to the war in Lebanon, will take place Sept. 21, organizers have announced.
But the Jerusalem police department has stated it will not allow the march to occur so close to the Jewish New Year holiday season. Officials said they're open to considering other dates.
Pride organizers responded that they won't back down a second time and will go to court to secure the September 21 date if necessary.
Orthodox Jews had threatened a massive counterdemonstration against the August parade, which also was opposed by Christian and Muslim religious figures, the mayor and right-wing politicians in the "holy city."
At last year's local pride parade, an ultra-Orthodox protester stabbed three marchers and was later convicted of attempted murder. Orthodox Jews tried to block the march and some 1,000 antigay militants staged a rowdy action during which some threw bottles of urine and bags of feces at the marchers.
WorldPride, which was last held in 2000 in Rome, is licensed by InterPride, the International Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Coordinators.
LATVIANS WHO ATTACKED GAYS PUNISHED
Some of the protesters who pelted Latvian gays with excrement on pride day have been punished.
The July 22 attacks in Riga occurred outside a gay religious service and meetings at a hotel -- events which replaced the planned gay pride parade after it was banned by the City Council and a court.
GLBT people coming and going from the events were confronted by Christian fundamentalists, ultranationalists and neo-Nazis, some of whom threw eggs, rotten food and human feces.
To date, seven of the protesters have been fined from $42 to $92 for petty hooliganism.
Linda Freimane, spokeswoman for the pride organizing group Mozaika, called the punishments inadequate, saying the attackers should have been charged with criminal hooliganism.
"This is not petty hooliganism but an incitement to hatred," she said. "The punishment for such activities must be heavier so the others would [see] clear that similar activities carry heavy punishment and the state considers them as serious offences."
Latvia's general prosecutor has agreed with Mozaika and is attempting to have the decisions annulled and the attackers retried under criminal statutes.
AMNESTY CONDEMNS TARGETING OF GLBT UGANDANS
Amnesty International has issued a condemnation of "the ongoing targeting and intimidation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Uganda." The organization cited new problems after the Red Pepper tabloid newspaper published in its August 8 issue the first names, workplaces and other identifying information of 45 men it claimed are gay.
"In at least three cases, people named by the Red Pepper magazine subsequently suffered harassment from and were ostracized by colleagues and families," the group said. "This article … encourages discrimination and puts those named at a high risk of violence. Furthermore, Amnesty International is concerned that those named may be arrested on the basis of their alleged sexual orientation and could face humiliating and degrading treatment in custody." Gay sex is illegal in Uganda. The punishment for "carnal knowledge against the order of nature" is up to life in prison.
The Red Pepper article stated, in part: "To a majority of us, straight thinking citizens, it homosexuality is an abominable sin, actually a mortal sin that goes against the nature of humanity. We are talking about men in this nation who are walking closely in the footsteps of Sir Elton Hercules John and the like by having engines that operate from the rear like the vintage Volkswagon cars. To show the nation how shocked we are and how fast the terrible vice known as sodomy is eating up our society, we have decided to unleash an exclusive list of men who enjoy taking on fellow men from the rear. We hope that by publishing this list, our brothers will confess and go back to the right path."
In 1999, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said of gays: "These few individuals who became known were either ignored or speared and killed by their parents. They wouldn't just go and wed another man publicly."
POLISH PM SAYS NATION IS GAY-FRIENDLY
To the astonishment of activists and others, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said August 30 that the nation is gay-friendly.
Speaking with European Union officials in Brussels, Kaczynski said: "I ask you not to believe in the myth of Poland as an anti-Semitic, homophobic and xenophobic country. … People with such homosexual preferences have full rights in Poland; there is no tradition in Poland of persecuting such people." In reality, Poland's gay community has been under attack from national and local officials in recent years - both before and especially after, the conservative Law and Justice Party came to power last year. President Lech Kaczynski, Jaroslaw's twin brother, was mayor of Warsaw when the 2004 and 2005 gay pride parades were banned. He reportedly called gays "perverts."
Speaking last March in Germany, Lech added: "I don't agree to see this issue in a way that there is a heterosexual culture and a homosexual culture and that they are equal. I see no reason to promote such attitudes, because if they were common, the human race would have to die out."
Jaroslaw has complained that Polish "gay people are allowed to conduct perverse demonstrations in the streets, but it is forbidden to discuss the issue of moral censorship."
Human Rights Watch said in February that the Law and Justice Party "brings to power officials with long records of opposing gay and lesbian rights."
WALESA APPEARS WITH ELTON JOHN
Former President Lech Walesa appeared on stage with gay singer Elton John at Poland's Sopot Festival September 2.
Walesa presented John with an Amber Nightingale award for his lifetime achievement and gave him a medal marking the 25th anniversary of the Solidarity Trade Union that Walesa headed and which helped bring down Polish communism.
During the concert, John reportedly stated: "I'm just a performer who plays people some music. I hope that my music helps people to forget about their problems for a few hours. But I'm also a gay man and I've heard that gay people face violence in Poland.
Leave us alone. We don't want to harm anybody. We just want to love and be loved." The comments reportedly elicited a loud ovation.
GAY FLAG FLIES OVER TAIPEI CITY HALL
City officials will raise the rainbow flag over Taipei City Hall September 17 to mark the launch of the 7th annual "LGBT Civil Rights Movement - Queer-Friendly Taipei," the Taipei Times reported.
The festival, hosted by the city's Department of Civil Affairs, aims to break down stereotypes and increase gay visibility and cultural diversity.
SCOTTISH FIREFIGHTERS PUNISHED FOR BOYCOTTING PRIDE
Nine firefighters who refused to staff an official booth at Pride Scotia in Glasgow, Scotland, have been punished by the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue department. A watch manager was demoted, suffering a $9,500 salary cut, and eight rank-and-file firefighters had written warnings placed in their employee files. The individuals, all from the Cowcaddens Fire Station, also must attend diversity-training classes.
The punishment could have been as strong as dismissal from the department. The individuals refused to work the Pride festival because they considered the assignment embarrassing or had moral objections to it, they said.

Η απάντηση της ΟΛΚΕ στις δηλώσεις του Αρχιεπισκόπου Χριστόδουλου

Διαβάσαμε χθές τις τελευταίες δηλώσεις του Αρχιεπισκόπου Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος κ. Χριστόδουλου, στην εισήγησή του στο Συνέδριο γάλλων συμβολαιογράφων για την αναγκαιότητα προστασίας του θεσμού της οικογένειας στα πλαίσια τού Ευρωπαϊκού Δικαίου. Ο κ. Χριστόδουλος δηλώνει πλέον ανοιχτά τις θέσεις του για θέματα που αυτήν την στιγμή είναι πλέον πραγματικότητα στην Eυρώπη και τον κόσμο, όπως το θέμα του γάμου μεταξύ ζευγαριών τού ίδιου φύλου καθώς κι εκείνο του δικαιώματος της υιοθεσίας από ένα ζευγάρι ή από ένα άτομο. Μιλάμε βέβαια πάντα για τον πολιτικό γάμο. Ο πολιτικός γάμος είναι αστικό δικαίωμα και η Εκκλησία έχει πάρει θέση από την στιγμή που έλαβε ισχύ στην Ελλάδα το 1982. Η Ομοφυλοφιλική Λεσβιακή Κοινότητα Ελλάδας ενστερνίζεται την ήδη υπάρχουσα θέση ότι ο πολιτικός γάμος δεν «γκρεμίζει» την οικογένεια αλλά την εμπλουτίζει με βάση τον πολιτισμό και την κοινωνία του σήμερα. Ο γάμος δεν είχε από την αρχή της υπάρξεώς του την μορφή που έχει σήμερα. Σε διάφορες χρονικές περιόδους και εποχές και σε διάφορες κουτλτούρες και πολιτισμούς είχε μορφές που δεν είχαν αναγκαστικά αναγνωρισθεί από την όποια εκκλησία. Ο κύριος Χριστόδουλος μιλάει ξαφνικά σήμερα σαν να αγνοεί κάθε άλλη κουλτούρα και πολιτισμό, με την μισαλλοδοξία χριστιανών άλλων πιο σκοτεινών αιώνων. Οι κοινωνίες σήμερα προχωρούν σε ένα διαχωρισμό Κράτους και Εκκλησίας στηρίζοντας την θέση ότι το δικαίωμα της πίστης σε όποια θρησκεία είναι δικαίωμα της καθεμιάς και του καθενός και όχι υποχρέωση, και αυτή είναι η αρχή που επικρατέι σήμερα σε κάθε δημοκρατική κοινωνία.
Η εκκλησία δεν πρέπει να παρεμβαίνει στο έργο της Πολιτείας δημιουργώντας διακρίσεις μέσα από την ισχύ που της δίνει η θέση της - «… απόδοτε ούν τα Καίσαρος Καίσαρι και τα του Θεού τω Θεώ» Ματθαίος κβ΄ 21 . Το γεγονός ότι συνεχίζουν να τελούνται γάμοι δείχνει την υπαρκτή επιθυμία από την μεριά των ζευγαριών και ως αστικό δικαίωμα θα συνεχίσει όσο η κοινωνία νοιώθει την ανάγκη τέλεσης γάμου. Αντίστοιχα η κατακόρυφη αύξηση των διαζυγίων δείχνει την ανάγκη αλλαγής της μορφής που ο γάμος έχει σήμερα. Ο πολιτικός γάμος μεταξύ ζευγαριών του ίδιου φύλου δεν πλήττει την ύπαρξη του γάμου αλλά την διευρύνει, καθώς επιτρέπει σε κάθε πολίτισσα και πολίτη ανεξάρτητα από το φύλο και τον σεξουαλικό προσανατολισμό να έχει πρόσβαση στα ίδια δικαιώματα.
Αναρωτιόμαστε αν ο κ Χριστόδουλος προτιμά παιδιά πεταμένα στα σκουπίδια, σε νοσοκομεία και ιδρύματα ή εξαναγκαμένα σε πορνεία από το να τα υιοθετεί μία ή ένας ενήλικας. Τα κριτήρια γονεϊκότητας στις δημοκρατικές πολιτείες είναι τα ίδια ακριβώς για όλες και για όλους χωρίς καμία διάκρισηση.
Ο κύριος Χριστόδουλος απειλήθηκε με την αντικατάσταση των λέξεων μητέρα και πατέρας στην ληξιαρχική πράξη της Ισπανίας με εκείνη των γεννητόρων. Είναι όμως πολύ γνωστό και αποδεκτό από πάντα ότι μητέρα και πατέρας είναι εκείνοι που μεγαλώνουν το παιδί για οποιουσδήποτε κοινωνικούς ή άλλους λόγους. ενώ ο πολιτικός γάμος για ετερόφυλα ζευγάρια ισχύει προ πολλών ετών. Στην Ελλάδα ισχύει από το 1982. «Πυρηνική έκρηξη ισχύος» δεν συνιστούν οι νέες μορφές οικογένειας που δίνουν ίσα δικαιώματα σε όλες τις πολίτισσες και όλους τους πολίτες και οι ενώσεις ανθρώπων που ώριμα αποφασίζουν τον πολιτικό γάμο χωρίς θρησκευτικές ή κοινωνικές πιέσεις, αλλά οι γυναίκες και τα παιδιά που είναι θύματα ενδοοικογενειακής βίας και κακοποίησης ετερόφυλων ως τώρα οικογενειών. Οι κοινωνίες ποτέ δεν ήταν ιδανικές και συμπαγείς μόνο μέσα από την αμοιβαία συνεργασία, ανεκτικότητα, αλληλεγγύη και την αναγνώριση της διαφορετικότητας δημιουργούν πολιτισμό και πρόοδο σε κάθε άλλη περίπτωση δημιουργούν πολίτισσες και πολίτες που πράττουν δυσμενείς διακρίσεις, εκτρέφουν την αδικία, καταδυναστεύουν την ανθρώπινη αξιοπρέπεια, ταπεινώνουν την ειρήνη και ευτελίζουν το ανθρώπινο γένος.
Ο κ. Χριστόδουλος θα έπρεπε να γνωρίζει λίγη περισσότερη Ιστορία πριν μάς μιλήσει για «το αίσθημα της παράδοσης του γαλλικού έθνους». Ακριβώς αυτό τους «…το άνοιγμα στην πνευματική καινοτομία και το έντονο αίσθημα της παράδοσης…» τούς έκανε να δημιουργήσουν προ δέκα ετών το αστικό συμβόλαιο συμβίωσης PACS που περιλαμβάνει όλες τις μορφές σεξουαλικού προσανατολισμού, . Σήμερα πια στην πράξη μέσα από έρευνες και μελέτες αποδείχθηκε πως η PACS επιτρέπει την ύπαρξη διακρίσεων, και η Γαλλίδα Moniquie Saliou γραμματέας Διεθνών σχέσεων PS (κόμμα των Πρασίνων) δήλωσε τον Απρίλιο του 2006 πως η Γαλλία προχωρεί κι αυτή μαζί με όλο και περισσότερες χώρες στον πλανήτη στην θέσπιση του πολιτικού γάμου και για τα ζευγάρια του ίδιου φύλου.
Ως τώρα κύριε Χριστόδουλε μόνο την άγνοια, την επιθυμία, την μη χρήση προφυλακτικών ή αντισυλληπτικών μεθόδων και ο βιασμός, γνωρίζουμε ως αιτίες δημιουργίας παιδιών, όμως η επιθυμία ως ελέυθερη βούληση, μετά από ώριμη σκέψη είναι δικαίωμα όλων όσων θέλουν να γίνουν γονείς . Κανένα παιδί στο κόσμο από υπάρξεως των ανθρωπίνων όντων δεν ρωτήθηκε για το να γεννηθεί ή όχι. Εκτός αν ξέρετε κάτι που εμείς αγνοούμε.

Διαβάσαμε χθές τις τελευταίες δηλώσεις του Αρχιεπισκόπου Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος κ. Χριστόδουλου, στην εισήγησή του στο Συνέδριο γάλλων συμβολαιογράφων για την αναγκαιότητα προστασίας του θεσμού της οικογένειας στα πλαίσια τού Ευρωπαϊκού Δικαίου. Ο κ. Χριστόδουλος δηλώνει πλέον ανοιχτά τις θέσεις του για θέματα που αυτήν την στιγμή είναι πλέον πραγματικότητα στην Eυρώπη και τον κόσμο, όπως το θέμα του γάμου μεταξύ ζευγαριών τού ίδιου φύλου καθώς κι εκείνο του δικαιώματος της υιοθεσίας από ένα ζευγάρι ή από ένα άτομο. Μιλάμε βέβαια πάντα για τον πολιτικό γάμο. Ο πολιτικός γάμος είναι αστικό δικαίωμα και η Εκκλησία έχει πάρει θέση από την στιγμή που έλαβε ισχύ στην Ελλάδα το 1982. Η Ομοφυλοφιλική Λεσβιακή Κοινότητα Ελλάδας ενστερνίζεται την ήδη υπάρχουσα θέση ότι ο πολιτικός γάμος δεν «γκρεμίζει» την οικογένεια αλλά την εμπλουτίζει με βάση τον πολιτισμό και την κοινωνία του σήμερα. Ο γάμος δεν είχε από την αρχή της υπάρξεώς του την μορφή που έχει σήμερα. Σε διάφορες χρονικές περιόδους και εποχές και σε διάφορες κουτλτούρες και πολιτισμούς είχε μορφές που δεν είχαν αναγκαστικά αναγνωρισθεί από την όποια εκκλησία. Ο κύριος Χριστόδουλος μιλάει ξαφνικά σήμερα σαν να αγνοεί κάθε άλλη κουλτούρα και πολιτισμό, με την μισαλλοδοξία χριστιανών άλλων πιο σκοτεινών αιώνων. Σε σχέση με την προηγούμενη ανακοίνωση θα σας μεταφέρω μια εμπειρία μου. Πέρυσι την 25η Νοέμβρη είχε γίνει μια πορεία στην Θεσσαλονίκη για την Βία εναντίων των Γυναικών. Μια φίλη μου έστειλε e-mail, μου το είπε και από κοντά και αποφάσισα να πάω. Υπήρχαν πανό αν θυμάμαι και από άλλες αντίστοιχες οργανώσεις και από άλλους νομούς. Υπήρχε διάθεση αλλά δεν υπήρχε κόσμος, δεν υπήρχε συμμετοχή. Δυστυχώς. Θεωρώ πως επιτελείται ένα πολύ σημαντικό έργο παρ’ όλα αυτά απαιτείται βοήθεια και από τους δημοτικούς μηχανισμούς της πόλης μας. Μου είχε αναφέρει μια κυρία πέρυσι ότι υπήρχε μια γραμμή επικοινωνίας του δήμου και δεν απαντούσε κανείς. Για να μην μιλήσουμε και για τις εγκαταστάσεις υποδοχής των κακοποιημένων γυναικών.
Όλα τα είχαμε η υποθαλάσσια μας μάρανε. Άντε τώρα.

Χθες βρήκα το πρόγραμμα του Κέντρου Κοινωνικής Υποστήριξης Γυναικών για τους μήνες Οκτώβριο έως Δεκέμβριο. Με θέμα την βία στις γυναίκες. Επειδή δεν υπάρχει σαρωτής για την αναδημοσίευση του φυλλαδίου αντιγράφω όλες τις πληροφορίες που σας ενδιαφέρουν.
Μας αφορά όλες και όλους.
Η βία κατά των γυναικών είναι μείζον κοινωνικό και δημόσιο πρόβλημα
επηρεάζει γυναίκες κάθε ηλικίας, πολιτισμικής προέλευσης και οικονομικού επιπέδου
ασκείται κυρίως από άνδρες σε διαπροσωπικές σχέσεις
έχει ποικίλες μορφές- σωματική, ψυχολογική, σεξουαλική, οικονομική, κοινωνική
προκαλεί βλάβες, ψυχολογικό κίνδυνο, κακή ανάπτυξη, στέρηση, θάνατο
έχει συνέπειες στην οικογένεια, την κοινωνία, την οικονομία
παράγεται και αναπαράγεται από την κατώτερη κοινωνική θέση της γυναίκας.
Μπορούμε να προλάβουμε και να σταματήσουμε τη βία.

Τίποτα πριν τίποτα μετά
Πριν από λίγες μέρες τελείωσα το ακόλουθο βιβλίο: Ναχμία, Νίνα. Τίποτα πριν τίποτα μετά. Αθήνα:Οδός Πανός, 2006.
Έργο εξαιρετικά καλογραμμένο. Γραφή που ρέει, όπως ρέουν και τα συναισθήματα από τις σελίδες του. Αν το 2005 σημαδεύτηκε από την έκδοση της Ερωμένης, αυτό το βιβλίο ίσως μέχρι στιγμής να είναι αυτό που σημαδεύει την ελληνική λεσβιακή λογοτεχνία για το 2006.

Όμως εγώ είχα απολαύσει τις ερωτικές μου συνευρέσεις με τον Τίτο. Δεν είχα απογοητευθεί από την σεξουαλική ετερόφυλη σχέση μου. Απλώς, αυτό δεν ήταν το πραγματικά ζητούμενο στη ζωή μου. Δεν με ολοκλήρωνε. Άλλα πράγματα λαχταρούσα περισσότερο. Κι αυτά ήταν τα χαρίσματα που βρήκα συγκεντρωμένα στη Μαρούσα. Αυτά που αναζητούσα από πάντα και πίστεψα πως είχα βρει αρχικά στον Τίτο. […] κανένας άντρας δεν θα μπορούσε να εννοήσει πως, για να συμφιλιωθεί με το σώμα της γυναίκας, έπρεπε να νιώσει πρώτα την ψυχή της. Γι’ αυτό και ο διχασμός του κόσμου. Η πηγή του κακού και της δυστυχίας του είναι αυτό. Οι τόσο διαφορετικές φύσεις δύο όντων που είναι αναγκασμένες να σμίξουν χωρίς να μπορεί ποτέ ο ένας να ικανοποιήσει τις ανάγκες του άλλου. […] αυτό είναι το τραγικό του ετερόφυλου έρωτα. Κρατάει πολύ λίγο και χάνεται απότομα σαν να μην ήρθε ποτέ. Και τότε βγαίνουν άλλα συναισθήματα μέσα από τον απέραντο πόνο και την απελπισία αυτής της απώλειας. (σελ. 104)
Η σχέση όμως ήταν τόσο πολύτιμη, ώστε να την βγάζει από την δομή των σκέψεων και των πεποιθήσεών της. Κάτι που τελικά θα μας έβαζε στον πόνο. Η απόφασή μας να ζήσουμε μαζί, με ότι μας είχε ενώσει μ’ έναν ιδανικό και σχεδόν πανανθρώπινο τρόπο, αποδεικνυόταν τελικά παγίδα όπως το είχε προβλέψει. Οι καρδίες μας θα γινόταν πεδία μάχης ενός αιματηρού, άνισου πολέμου, και οι ζωές μας θα πλήρωναν στον Μολώχ της ανθρώπινης σκληρότητας τα λύτρα γι’ αυτό το μοναδικό που ζήσαμε. Για την ιδιαίτερή τύχη μας να πέσει η μια πάνω στην άλλη και ν’ αγκαλιαστούμε με όλο το εύρος του ανθρώπινου συναισθήματος. Ενός συναισθήματος όμως ανεπίτρεπτου από την κοινωνία των ανθρώπων. Μιας κοινωνίας που τα όπλα της είναι πολύ ισχυρά για ν’ αποκρουσθούν από την γυμνή αλήθεια των διάφανων ψυχών και σωμάτων. ( σελ. 156)
[…] όσο και αν προσπαθήσαμε, δεν μπορέσαμε να την κάνουμε μια λεύτερη αγάπη. Ανασύραμε από την συνείδηση μας ένα σωρό λόγους για να την δικαιολογούμε, αλλά φαίνεται πως δεν τα καταφέραμε. Γιατί η αγάπη δεν χρειάζεται να την δικαιολογείς, αλλά να την ζεις. Εμείς όμως την προβάλλαμε μόνο μεταξύ μας, λες και κάναμε κάτι κακό. Είναι δύσκολο αυτό το πράγμα. Πολύ δύσκολο. Να κρύβεις πράγματα που υπό άλλες συνθήκες θα ήταν φυσικό να βγάλεις στο φως. Κάτι σαν δικαιολογία για κάποια άδικη ενοχή που πρέπει να αισθάνεσαι είν’ αυτό. ( σελ. 163).

Καλως ήρθατε στον straight κόσμο
Τα παρακάτω περιστατικά γίνανε μέσα σε διάστημα δέκα ημερών.
Περιστατικό πρώτο:
Πριν από λίγες μέρες και ενώ βρισκόμουν σε ένα ταξί Μετά από λίγο μπαίνει μια ομολογουμένως όμορφη γυναίκα που δεν θα ήταν πάνω από 35. Έπιασε αμέσως κουβέντα με τον ταξιτζή και είχε ωραίο λόγο. Από τις συζητήσεις που είχανε φάνηκε ότι ήταν αρκετά δραστήρια σε κάποιον πολιτικό χώρο. Έβρεχε και ο ταξιτζής σχολίασε τις καταστροφές που γίνανε εκείνη την περίοδο στην περιοχή της βόρειας Χαλκιδικής. Εκείνη δήλωσε άγνοια (;) απαντώντας: Επόμενο είναι να μας συμβαίνουν όλα αυτά έτσι όπως έχουμε καταντήσει το περιβάλλον και την κοινωνίας μας. Γιατί παραπονιόμαστε; Τρία είναι τα κακά: φυσικές καταστροφές, οι gay και οι λεσβίες…Με πολύ υπερηφάνεια δήλωσε ότι θέλει να γίνει μητέρα 4 αγοριών που θα τους κάνει άντρες.
Περιστατικό δεύτερο:
Στον χώρο εργασίας μου. Χθες μπήκε ένα αγόρι με συμπεριφορά αρκετά θηλυπρεπή. Ένας συνομήλικος του τού έστειλε κοροϊδευτικά δύο φιλάκια. Το άλλο αγόρι δεν έδειξε να δίνει σημασία και κάθισε. Μετά από λίγο ζήτησα να μιλήσω στο δεύτερο αγόρι. Τον ενημέρωσα ότι είδα τι συνέβη και θα ήθελα να μου εξηγήσει τον λόγο. Η απάντηση που πήρα: αφού κυρία είναι κουνιστός απάντησε αφελέστατα.
Από τότε που αποδέχτηκα τον σεξουαλικό μου προσανατολισμό βρίσκομαι να συμμετέχω ή να γίνομαι μάρτυρας συζητήσεων για την ομοφυλοφιλία – ακόμη και με άτομα που δεν έχουν ιδέα για μένα (ή τουλάχιστον έτσι νομίζω) .
Σε κάποια μπορώ και επεμβαίνω και απαντώ. Σε κάποια όχι. Όπως στο πρώτο περιστατικό που σας αφηγήθηκα: πολύ θα ήθελα να έβγαζα το κολάρο και να της το φορούσα καπέλο. Και να την ρωτούσα
αν ένας από τους 4 γιους σου έλεγε ότι είναι ομοφυλόφιλος τι θα έκανες; Ποιόν θα κατηγορούσες ότι φταίει; Η σημερινή η άτιμη η κοινωνία; Το περιβάλλον; Αναρωτήθηκες ποτέ σου ότι η ομοφυλοφιλία δεν είναι επιλογή; Ότι γεννιέσαι ομοφυλόφιλος και επιλέγεις αν θα ζήσεις ως ομοφυλόφιλος; Ότι η ομοφυλοφιλία υπήρχε πάντοτε και σε όλες τις κοινωνίες απλά τώρα οι άνθρωποι εκδηλώνουν πιο ανοιχτά τον σεξουαλικό τους προσανατολισμό;
Και όμως δεν της απάντησα. Μούδιασα ολόκληρη από αυτήν την απροσδόκητη τροπή που είχε η συζήτηση. Δε περίμενα ένας άνθρωπος αρκετά μορφωμένος (;) και με λόγο μεστό θα εξέφραζε τέτοια συμπεράσματα. Άλλο μόρφωση ομως και άλλο καλλιέργεια. Παρόλα τα χαστούκια που μου έχουν δοθεί συνεχίζω να ελπίζω ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που σέβονται αυτό που δεν θεωρείτε από την κοινωνία και εκκλησία ορθό. Και υποσχέθηκα στον εαυτό μου ότι την επόμενη φορά δεν θα αφήσω να πέσει καρφίτσα. Υπάρχουν πολλοί τρόποι να πεις αυτό που πρεσβεύεις χωρίς να προσβάλλεις τον άλλο. Ο τρόπος είναι αυτός που κερδίζει.

Στο δεύτερο περιστατικό δεν έμεινα άπραγη. Μίλησα ιδιαιτέρως στον νεαρό που έστελνε τα φιλάκια. Και αφού πήρα την απάντησή μου του ζήτησα να καθίσουμε να μιλήσουμε ήρεμα και ωραία. Του εξήγησα πέντε πράγματα για την ομοφυλοφιλία.
Τον ρώτησα
Αν του μιλήσεις θα χαλάσει το image που έχεις χτίσει μέσα στον χώρο
που κινείσαι; Ναι μου απαντά. Άρα στο βάθος φοβάσαι του απαντώ. Και μην νομίζεις και ότι όλοι οι υπόλοιποι δεν φοβούνται. Σκέφτηκες ότι αυτοί που είναι πολέμιοι των ομοφυλοφίλων υπάρχει πιθανότητα να είναι κατά βάθος και οι ίδιοι; Και να μην το ομολογούν; Έσκυβε το κεφάλι και δεν μου απαντούσε. Του ζήτησα να τα σκεφτεί.
Δεν ξέρω αν έπιασαν έστω και λίγο τόπο αυτά που του είπα. Ίσως σε κάποιους να φαντάζουν τα παραπάνω πολύ διδακτικά, όπως στις ιστορίες του κατηχιτικού. Όλοι όμως γινόμαστε μάρτυρες παρόμοιων περιστατικών. Αισθάνομαι κάθε μέρα που περνάει στο πετσί μου την αλαζονεία, την υποκρισία του κόσμου. Και η απογοήτευση μου μεγαλώνει ακόμη περισσότερο όταν βλέπω νέους ανθρώπους να πρεσβεύουν τέτοιες αρτηριοσκληρωτικές απόψεις. Να μην μιλήσω και για την επίσημη Εκκλησία.

Χθες ξαναχτύπησε ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος, που μας πάει και μας θέλει στην Εκκλησία με την ακόλουθη δήλωση
Γνωρίζετε τόσο καλά όσο και εγώ ότι ήδη υπάρχουν δυνάμεις και τάσεις που θέλουν την αντικατάσταση της οικογένειας από τη union civile, δηλαδή από μια συμβιωτική μονάδα, όπου ένα ζευγάρι ετεροφυλοφιλικό ή ομοφυλοφιλικό, ή ακόμη και ένας μόνον ενήλικας, μπορεί να υιοθετήσει ένα ή περισσότερα παιδιά. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο γάμος ως ένωση ανδρός και γυναικός καταργείται, ή ίσως θα επιτρέπεται, αλλά ως μια φολκλορική εκδήλωση κάποιων γραφικών του περιθωρίου.

Εξάψαλμος κατά ομοφυλοφιλίας

Και αναφερόμενος στο θεσμό της οικογένειας είπε στο ακροατήριό του: «Γνωρίζετε τόσο καλά όσο και εγώ ότι ήδη υπάρχουν δυνάμεις και τάσεις που θέλουν την αντικατάσταση της οικογένειας από τη union civile, δηλαδή από μια συμβιωτική μονάδα, όπου ένα ζευγάρι ετεροφυλοφιλικό ή ομοφυλοφιλικό, ή ακόμη και ένας μόνον ενήλικας, μπορεί να υιοθετήσει ένα ή περισσότερα παιδιά. Στην Ινδία, ψηφίστηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2005 νόμος βάσει του οποίου το παιδί που γεννήθηκε από δότη σπέρματος ή ωαρίου απαγορεύεται να πληροφορηθεί τους πραγματικούς γονείς του». Και συνέχισε μ' ένα άλλο παράδειγμα: «Στις ΗΠΑ και τον Καναδά, ασκούνται πιέσεις για τη νομιμοποίηση πολυγαμικών γάμων, έτσι ώστε ο γάμος των ομοφυλοφίλων κυρίως να έχει πλήρη άνθηση, και τα παιδιά των οικογενειών αυτών να έχουν πολυγονεϊκή ταυτότητα».

Στην Ινδία, ψηφίστηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2005 νόμος βάσει του οποίου το παιδί που γεννήθηκε από δότη σπέρματος ή ωαρίου απαγορεύεται να πληροφορηθεί τους πραγματικούς γονείς του». Λουκουμάκια και Μπισκοτάκια
Όταν μας το επιτρέπουν τα ωράρια μας θα καθίσουμε δίπλα – δίπλα και θα πιούμε ελληνικό καφέ. Κουβεντιάζουμε χαλαρά, μιλάμε για την μέρα που μας περιμένει. Με τις πρώτες γουλιές αρχίζουν τα μάτια να ανοίγουν και το σώμα να ξυπνάει.
Ο καλός ελληνικός καφές πρέπει να ψήνεται στην χόβολη – να φουσκώνει αργά και την κατάλληλη στιγμή, λίγο πριν δέσει το καϊμάκι, τον βάζεις στο φλιτζάνι. Κατά προτίμηση συνοδεύεται με λουκουμάκι ή με μπισκοτάκι Μιράντα Παπαδοπούλου που μου αρέσει πολύ. (εδώ κάνουμε και διαφήμιση αλλά χαλάλι τους)

Την περίοδο της τουρκοκρατίας και επειδή οι καιροί ήταν χαλεποί, οι Έλληνες έπαιρναν αυτόν καφέ και τον ξέραιναν στον ήλιο. Μετά τον έβραζαν και έπιναν τον καφέ τους...
Επειδή για μένα και την σύντροφό μου ο ελληνικός καφές είναι αφορμή για πολλά όμορφα πράγματα αποφασίσαμε επιτέλους πως τα ονόματα που θα χρησιμοποιούμε για να μας ξεχωρίζετε θα έχουν σχέση με τον καφέ ή τα συνοδευτικά του.

Σκέψεις για τις σχέσεις...
Ένα τροχαίο όσο σοβαρό ή λιγότερο σοβαρό και αν είναι σε βάζει σε σκέψεις και αν θέλετε σε ταρακουνάει σε πολλά επίπεδα. Μερικά δέκατα του δευτερολέπτου μπορούν να αλλάξουν τα πάντα γύρω σου...Λόγω της κατάστασής μου, σήμερα έκατσα στην οθόνη μπροστά και επειδή είμαι σε διάθεση ευαίσθητη ήθελα να γράψω τις ακόλουθες σκέψεις γιατί τελικά πρέπει αυτό που αισθανόμαστε να το εκφράζουμε έγκαιρα και ευτυχώς που κάτι τέτοιο συμβαίνει στην σχέση μας. Απλά θα ήθελα να το μοιραστώ και μαζί σας:
Σκεφτόμενη τον άνθρωπό μου, ευγνωμονώ την στιγμή που οι δρόμοι μας συναντήθηκαν. Για πόσο; Άγνωστο. Το σίγουρο είναι πως όλες οι σχέσεις θέλουν κόπο και ανοιχτή ακρόαση.
Αυτό που μου αρέσει πάνω απο όλα είναι η κατανόηση, η επικοινωνία και ο 'χώρος' που δίνει η μία στην άλλη. Πιστεύω πως όλα τα παραπάνω, πέρα απο την πολύ αγάπη, είναι απαραίτητα συστατικά για να 'δέσει το γλυκό'. Υπάρχουν και οι στιγμές που οι προσδοκίες μας, τα θέλω μας, υπερβαίνουν αυτό που μπορεί να δώσει ο άλλος και τότε γινόμαστε εγωιστές, ζηλιάρηδες και πάει λέγοντας.
Όταν σκέφτομαι την σχέση μας, θυμάμαι τα λόγια του Khalil Gibran για τον Γάμο - και εγώ το επεκτείνω νοητικά και στις σχέσεις. Τα γράφω και στα ελληνικά και στό πρωτότυπο κείμενο στα αγγλικά που μου αρέσει πολύ:
Γεννηθήκατε μαζί και θα είστε παντοτινά μαζί[...]
Αφήστε όμως να υπάρχουν και αποστάσεις στην ένωσή σας[...]
Αγαπάτε ο ένας τον άλλο αλλά μην κάνετε δεσμά απο την αγάπη:

ΑΝΕΠΙΔΟΤΕΣ ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΕΣ 5. ΔΗΜΟΤΙΚΕΣ - ΝΟΜΑΡΧΙΑΚΕΣ ΕΚΛΟΓΕΣ 2006
Πολλές αντικρουόμενες και σκόρπιες σκέψεις μου έρχονται συνειρμικά διαβάζοντας την επιστολή. Θεωρώ πως θέτει συνοπτικά όλα τα καίρια ζητήματα που μας απασχολούν σε σχέση με την παρουσία μας και την θέση μας στους δήμους και κοινότητες της διαμονής μας.
Επειδή τώρα αρχίζω σιγά σιγά και ασχολούμαι πιο εμπεριστατωμένα με τα δικαιώματα των ομοφυλόφιλών και επειδή δεν γνωρίζω και πολλά για την ιστορία και όσα έχουν γίνει στο παρασκήνιο της ιστορίας της ελληνικής ομοφυλοφιλικής κοινότητας κάνω μια ερώτηση:
Μήπως τέτοιες επιστολές θα ήταν καλό να στέλνονται πιο συχνά και όχι μόνο λίγο πριν τις εκλογές;
Απο την άλλη και για να κάνω τον δικηγόρο του διαβόλου όταν κάποια στιγμή για τον οποιοδήποτε λόγο θα κλιθούμε να βάλουμε την υπογραφή μας σε τέτοιου είδους διαμαρτυρίες ή επιστολές και για να αποδείξουμε έμπρακτα πλέον, έστω και με αυτόν τον τρόπο αυτό που πρεσβεύουμε στην καθημερινή μας ζωή και στα ιστολόγιά μας, θα το κάνουμε;
(Θα ήθελα πολύ να πιστευω πως ναι. Όπως θα ήθελα να πιστεύω ότι θα υπογράψουν και ετερόφυλοι που σέβονται τον σεξουαλικό προσανατολισμό του διπλανού τους)
Επίσης σκέφτομαι και το ακόλουθο: υπάρχουν πάρα πολλοί ομοφυλόφιλοι/ες που έχουν δικό τους ιστολόγιο και έτσι μπορούν να εκφράζονται ελεύθερα και να διακινούνται ιδέες, νέα και άρθρα αλλά κρυβόμαστε πίσω απο την ανωνυμία μας. (Υπάρχουν βέβαια και περίπτωσεις όπου καλλιεργούνται πραγματικές φιλίες μέσα απο μια τέτοιου είδους επικοινωνία οπότε η ανωνυμία πλέον δεν υπάρχει)
Καταλήγω πάλι στην χιλιοειπωμένη δήλωση ότι δεν είναι η κοινωνία μας έτοιμη να δεχτεί αυτό που θεωρείτε διαφορετικό. Και για να μπορέσεις να το πείς να 5-10 ανθρώπους πρέπει να δουλέψεις πολύ τον εαυτό σου, να σε δεχτείς...
Επίσης είναι πολύ εύκολο όσοι δεν είναι οργανωμένοι να περιμένουν στην γωνία και να κρίνουν μόνο αρνητικά τις προθέσεις που βρίσκονται πίσω απο κάποια προσπάθεια. Όχι πως πρέπει να τα δεχόμαστε όλα και να συμφωνούμε σε όλα, σωστά;
Καταλήγω να κάνω την ακόλουθη σκέψη: Για τις αρνητικές σκέψεις και τα συναισθήματα που προκαλούνται στους περισσότερους ετερόφυλους σε ότι αφορά τα δικαιώματα μου έχω μερίδιο ευθύνης και εγώ...
Ίσως όμως αυτό το ιστολόγιο να είναι μόνο η αρχή μας και όχι το τέλος της προσπάθειάς μας...

SWEDISH ANTIGAYS CONVICTED OF HATE CRIME
Four Swedish antigay activists were convicted of illegal agitation against a minority group July 6 for distributing pamphlets that, among other things, blamed gays' "promiscuous lifestyles" for the "plague" of AIDS.
The literature was passed out near a school in Söderhamn, 150 miles north of Stockholm.
The Supreme Court punished three of the men pended sentence and a fine of 100 days' salary; the fourth was given a year of probation.
NORWEGIAN POLITICIAN, NEWSPAPER CHARGED WITH DISCRIMINATION
A municipal councilor and a newspaper in Farsund, Norway, have been accused of discrimination over a letter to the editor the politician wrote calling for a straights-only beach, the Aftenposten daily reported July 11.
Odd Djøseland, a member of the right-wing Progress Party, maintains his letter was a joke. In it, he claimed heterosexual beachgoers are uncomfortable when gays "drool" over them. "I therefore want a beach in our community that's free of gays and lesbians, a place where we normal, heterosexual people can sunbathe and swim in peace and quiet," he said.
But some readers didn't see the humor. Local bisexual Bent Sandvand was "offended and insulted," and filed a complaint against Djøseland with police. And reader Steinar Spjelkaviknes filed a complaint against the newspaper, Farsunds Avis, alleging violation of press rules concerning respect for people's identities.
MAURESMO WINS WIMBLEDON
French lesbian Amé1ie Mauresmo won the Wimbledon title July 8, thereby becoming the No. 1 women's tennis player in the world. She beat Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"I wasn't playing my best tennis, far from it. That kind of day happens," Henin-Hardenne explained.
Mauresmo said of her win: "It is very sweet. Maybe if it came seven years ago it would not have had the same taste. Things come when they have to come.
"It seems I have finally found how to handle the nerves a bit better," she added. "I really know more now how to play tennis than a few years ago. I think everything is really coming together."
CHILE MAY REPEAL ANTIGAY LAWS
Chile's Congress is considering repeal of laws that have been used to harass gays. The regulations, which ban "offenses to morals and good customs," have been used against GLBT people who express their sexual orientation in public.
Lawmakers also are debating gay-inclusive hate-crimes legislation. Gay activists think there is a better chance of advancing their agenda under Chile's new president, socialist Michelle Bachelet.
CANADIAN GOV'T ACCUSED OF BLOCKING OUTGAMES VISAS
Canada's government is denying and delaying visas for some people planning to attend the 1st World Outgames July 29-August 5 in Montreal, Liberal members of Parliament charged July 11.
Quebec MP Raymonde Folco said more than 250 individuals -- mostly participants in an associated human-rights conference -- lack entry visas, and that the new Conservative government's antigay sentiments may be to blame. "I would like to be generous and say there may be another common denominator, but I don't see it," she said.
A spokeswoman for Citizenship and Immigration Minister Monte Solberg dismissed the accusation, telling the Winnipeg Sun that "most of the applicants are still in the normal review process." At the same time, the spokeswoman, Lesley Harmer, told the Montreal Gazette that more than half of the individuals in question have yet to submit a visa application.
Outgames Press Secretary Pascal Dessureault said he is "really worried" about the delays.
PORTO SEES FIRST PRIDE PARADE
About 300 people marched in the first gay pride parade in Porto, Portugal, July 8. The city, Portugal's second largest, has had pride events since 2001, but never a parade.
The march started at the location where a transgender woman was killed this year, then proceeded through the narrow streets of the old city to a rally point in a central square near City Hall.
In February, "Gisberta" was beaten, stoned, stomped, burned and sexually assaulted with a stick for two days, then thrown alive into a deep pit at the abandoned building where she lived. Fourteen boys admitted involvement in the crime. Their trial, closed to the public, is under way.

Michael Robertson, library technician and one of the founders of the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, is in the process of preserving the past 35 years of the Empty Closet and making the entire paper available for search and display on the Internet. He is currently seeking funding.
Empty Closet: What is your history with the Gay Alliance?
Michael Robertson: I was one of the founding members; I was the second or third president, I can’t quite remember which. I was a grad student at Geneseo coming to the meetings of the Gay Liberation Front at the University of Rochester in the fall of 1972.U.R. said in 1973 that they wouldn’t fund the group anymore because non-students were attending. So in the summer of ’73, the GAGV was founded. In fact I met with a lawyer, Emmeline Logan-Baldwin, to go through the motions of incorporating the GAGV as a 501 3c non-profit.We passed the hat at the Sunday night meetings – that was the GAGV budget. The first center was on Brown St. We were only there a few months and then we moved to the Genesee Co-op on Monroe Ave. We had some trouble – a state legislator swore he would block our incorporation, but he wasn’t able to…. And of course we had frequent death threats.
EC: What is the project about? What are you trying to accomplish?
MR: All we have of the Empty Closet are the print editions, nothing on microfilm or digital. The U.R. Rare Books and Archives Division has almost a complete run of the paper, starting with the very first issue, January 1971.Connie Gates and I have spent the past two years inventorying every last issue and page number, through January 2004. There are over 9,000 pages!U.R. wasn’t sure they had a complete run. We were looking to see not only which issues were missing, but which were damaged and should be replaced before they were scanned on microfilm or digitized. There were only four missing issues, which was remarkable, and five damaged ones, and we were able to replace them with the help of community members, primarily Whitey LeBlanc, the first president of the Gay Alliance.We stopped at 2004 because Jim Anderson (EC graphic designer) discovered in the fall of 2004 that we can digitize entire publications without scanning. Our original goal was simply to digitize all issues and make them available on the web for search and display. After delving into it, I learned that the best way was to have it microfilmed first – microfilm will last for 500 years. Digital copies, or the material they’re stored on, changes so often that they may not be readable after a few years. Microfilm is a sure bet and there won’t be a problem reading it in 500 years.Much to my surprise, it turned out that we had over 9,000 pages to scan, so I realized the best approach was first to microfilm and from that make digital copies, which we can make available on the Internet. Historically it’s very important to have stored copies of the print edition. Since the EC and Gay Liberation Front were both born at U.R., the university feels they have real importance, and they have tried to collect every issue and move them, unfolded, into acid free boxes in their huge temperature-controlled preservation room. The problem with the ‘70s and ‘80s issues is that they have turned yellow and are crumbling, even in preservation boxes, and they can’t be scanned.We also recorded all the different editors of the paper, and the four different sizes: first the paper was 8 1/2 x 11, then 8 1/2 x 10”, then 8 1/2 x 14, and finally the current size, 11 1/2 x 17.U.R. suggested that we get funding to send their collection for microfilming and digitizing to a national organization that does this kind of work, mostly for newspapers – the OCLT. That once was something like “Online Ohio College Library catalogue” – but now it’s a national non-profit just known as OCLT. We’re applying for this funding right now.
EC: What do you feel are the chief benefits to doing this project?
MR: There are so many reasons to preserve the EC. I think most of us underestimate the importance – local, statewide, even national –of those 9,000 pages. It after all documents our social and political history, our struggle for equal rights, gay community involvement in art and culture, literary productions, news from this area, New York and the national movement.Since it is crumbling, and we do want to keep a record for research purposes as well, it needs to be there to serve as a means of educating the public about what has happened in the gay community. Education counters discrimination and hate crimes, and aids acceptance of the gay community. It’s just so important that it’s there as an educational tool as well as historical record. If we forget our past we’re doomed to repeat it, and we can’t build on it. I’ll bet there have been well over 1,000 people involved in producing the paper over the years, mostly volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours – and then the thousands of people who have read it and had it change their lives.The fact that it will be available online is one more factor to help people today, and it will particularly help gay youth. It will be more accessible online.I’ve been brainstorming about starting a searchable database on the web of what we currently have available in digital form. The CDs from the last few years can be converted into pdf files that give an image of the actual pages, and that you can look through. We have current issues in the database and now we need to microfilm and then digitize the archival editions.It was my idea to do this project; the initiative came from me and not the Gay Alliance. The agency has struggled to keep going, much less to spend thousands on something that’s not a basic priority. So I have never asked the GAGV for money. We’re hopefully optimistic about getting funding – but we haven’t got it yet.The Human Sexuality Archives at Cornell University library is very interested in seeing the EC digitized and would like to have a complete run as well. They understand the importance of this historically. Also the Rochester Public Library purports to have a complete run. Theirs is not in a preservation environment and they are concerned about deterioration of the older issues.
EC: How has the climate changed for the lgbt community in the last 35 years – what strikes you the most?
MR: Some things have changed dramatically and some have sadly remained the same. We have made much more progress politically and in gaining acceptance than I thought we would 30 years ago. Debates about equal marriage rights have been a real mind-blowing thing for me in terms of social revolution.The part that makes me sad is that we are still victims of hate crimes. People still want to kill and hurt us. That’s the part I would change – that there is still violence against us.
EC: Anything to add?
MR: I want to emphasize that the collection at UR Rare Books Department is open to the public. You have to sign in and ask specifically for the issues you want to see. You have to lock up your briefcase and can’t bring in pens – just pencils. They do take some security precautions.We’ve received letters of support for our grant application from the head of the Rochester Public Library Local History and Geneaology Department, as well as from RIT Library Director Chan McKenzie, and also from Cornell. U.R. has asked us to say in our application that they want to deposit both microfilms and copies of digital files in their collection in the Rare Books Archives, and to store one copy of the microfilm in underground storage in a national storage facility – for posterity.
